Phraya Phananuchorn, Kasetsart University 9th Chairman of the University Council
Phraya Phananuchorn, formerly know as Preng Sakornbutr, was the 9th Chairman of the Kasetsart University Council (April 15, 1948 - November 29, 1948). He was an important person in the area of Thai forestry. He initiated the forestry management during the reign of King Chulalongkorn or King Rama V. The Royal Forest Department was established on September 18, 1896. In an early year, there were the British in the government service. The fist British was Mr. H. Slade, who initiated the fundamental principle to recruit students for forestry studying scholarship aboard before got back and work in government service. Phraya Phananuchorn was granted the scholarship to study at Forest College, Dehradun, India. He was trained in both theory and practice in intensive forestry courses. He was equipped with general science, Botanical science, forest engineering, benefits of forests, as well as law related to the forest. Even though the study at Dehradun was every tough, he proved to be success to win the First-Class Honors, Gold Medal, and Silver Medal in Forestry science, to be the first person who came from the country that was not the United Kingdom’s colony receiving the gold and silver medal. When he came back to Thailand, he worked hard and pioneered the forest development in Thailand, both in education And state work.
